Separate Panel for Export of Rice Under APEDA
As Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority. APEDA’s main focus has been only for basmati rice, non-basmati exporters were demanding for a separate board since long.
Under the items which fall under APEDA, rice and buffalo meat exports together have 60% share in terms of value.
APEDA’s senior officials said that it is not the case that APEDA’s working or government policy is only responsible for exports. It also depends on international demand, competition etc., Major rice Importing nations does not consider India as their regular and sustainable destination for import of rice. Price rise due to local demand and policy changes are also few of considerable points responsible for decline in export of rice from India thus creating a separate board is not a solutions. Since there are separate boards for tea, coffee and rubber and APEDA’s work majorly includes working for Rice and buffalo exports. If these tow are taken away APEDA will be wordless.

Although APEDA has not yet released official figures of 2019-2020, non basmati rice exports for April-January 2019-20 period stood at 1.01 million tonnes about which is about 36 per cent on lower side as compared to previous year.
BV Krishna Rao, President of the Rice Exporters Association said that “The demand from new buyers such as Malaysia and the Philippines should help the recovery in exports this year,” He also added that fixing of minimum support price (MSP) is a major challenge for the exporters as every year it has been rising irrespective of the international prices. Though, we support the government’s plan in doubling farmers’ income, which can be done through DBT also,”
